After two consecutive and controversial years of host Ricky Gervais, the SNL alums and respective ’30 Rock’ and ‘Parks and Recreation’ stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took over hosting duties for the 70th annual Golden Globes, to critical acclaim. Now they returned for the 71st gala, held once again at the Beverly Hills Hilton, in Beverly Hills, CA.
The started off the show with a lengthy monologue skewering a number of the nominated movies and television shows and, as expected several members of Hollywood’s hallowed A list in the audience.
‘American Hustle’ got a new title, they revealed after ‘Explosion at the Wig Factory’ was dropped. As for George Clooney in ‘Gravity,’ they chalked it up to ‘the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age,’ referencing his costar Sandra Bullock.
Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ got its fair share of skewering as did its costars, notably ‘If I wanted to see Jonah Hill masturbate at a pool party, I’d go to one of Jonah Hill’s pool parties.’ Lest the ‘Wolf’ himself be neglected, later on in the show, Tina Fey introduced the star saying, “Like a supermodel’s vagina, let’s all give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio.”
It was quite a night and through it all, the hosts carried the show even through its awkward moments, notably Jacqueline Bisset’s odd, rambling acceptance speech which saw her drop the S-bomb that the network censors did not quite catch in time.
The reviews of the hosts as well as the show itself have been mostly favorable. Here’s a roundup.
