Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returned as hosts for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards show. How did they do this second time around? See the opening monologue and other highlights and find out what the critics are saying in their reviews!
After two consecutive and controversial years of host Ricky Gervais, the SNL alums and respective ’30 Rock’ and ‘Parks and Recreation’ stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took over hosting duties for the 70th annual Golden Globes, to critical acclaim. Now they returned for the 71st gala, held once again at the Beverly Hills Hilton, in Beverly Hills, CA.
The started off the show with a lengthy monologue skewering a number of the nominated movies and television shows and, as expected several members of Hollywood’s hallowed A list in the audience.
‘American Hustle’ got a new title, they revealed after ‘Explosion at the Wig Factory’ was dropped. As for George Clooney in ‘Gravity,’ they chalked it up to ‘the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age,’ referencing his costar Sandra Bullock.
Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ got its fair share of skewering as did its costars, notably ‘If I wanted to see Jonah Hill masturbate at a pool party, I’d go to one of Jonah Hill’s pool parties.’ Lest the ‘Wolf’ himself be neglected, later on in the show, Tina Fey introduced the star saying, “Like a supermodel’s vagina, let’s all give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio.”
It was quite a night and through it all, the hosts carried the show even through its awkward moments, notably Jacqueline Bisset’s odd, rambling acceptance speech which saw her drop the S-bomb that the network censors did not quite catch in time.
The reviews of the hosts as well as the show itself have been mostly favorable. Here’s a roundup.
“….[All the Golden Globes show] needs to do is clean up the directing and producing a bit, rehire the dynamic duo of Fey and Poehler, and work on the delicate task of playing off the right people while allowing others to have their say. That’s a lot shorter of a to-do list than the Emmys and Oscars people are staring at. So the night must have been a success. Feel free to debate the winners and losers all you want, but as television entertainment it worked more often than not. ….” — The Hollywood Reporter
“…Their good material at this year’s Globes, which was bittier, cheekier, and mainly confined to the first half, propelled a hefty show forward and gave us a safe landing pad after every slightly awkward acceptance speech. Even when their material seemed stale or a bit feeble, their reliably chipper delivery kept it in a reassuring safe zone: they’re a Teflon-coated double act by now, incapable of being embarrassing….” — The Telegraph
“…. What might go down in history as the pregnant-pause, followed-by-being-played-off Golden Globe Awards proved a curiously awkward affair, even by the standards of an awards showcase with a reputation for looseness and unpredictability. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler reprised their role as hosts, but the duo failed to produce more than sporadic moments of mirth, in a show where honorary-award recipient Woody Allen looked prescient, in hindsight, by staying home…..” — Variety
“….The Golden Globes couldn’t have been much more entertaining, and for that we can thank Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and, shockingly enough, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The “Saturday Night Live” veterans started the show with a 10-minute wall of laughter. It was the best opening monologue — make that dialogue — of any awards show in recent memory. They set a high bar none of the winners or presenters could match comedically, so they found other ways to entertain…..” — The Wrap
“…. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were both gorgeous and funny for their second go ’round as the hosts of the Golden Globes — providing more evidence why they’re America’s most wanted award show hosts. The pair’s opening monologue was chock full with zingers delivered with sweet smiles…..” –New York Daily News
