Kristen Stewart on Her Image, Criticism, Staying True to Herself and More

Kristen Stewart is outspoken about her fashion choices and how she feels about other people’s perceptions of her in a new interview. The star of ‘Camp X-Ray’ and ‘Clouds of Sils Maria’ gives some insight into how she lives life, personally and professionally post-Twilight Saga.

And it is good to see Kristen Stewart moving forward and beyond the franchise and the phenomena that was ‘The Twilight Saga.’ She may have risen to fame as Bella Swan, and gone through more than her share of tabloid drama thanks to a high profile romance with Robert Pattinson, a cheating scandal and breakup. But now she is, at 23, her own person and emerging as a serious and well-regarded actress. She has met with critical acclaim and it’s just a matter of time before we see her as a nominee for Golden Globe, an Oscar and more.

Kristen Stewart spoke with Into The Gloss, and while the bulk of the interview centered around beauty and image, she did weigh in on her professional life, saying, “As long as I feel solid about my creative choices, people can have whatever image or perception of me that they’d like. You can’t think that someone’s impression of you is wrong—it’s their impression—and, therefore, you really can’t worry about it. So many people have developed their impressions based on f–king bullsh-t, and you’ll never do anything true to yourself, you’ll never make the art you want to make, if you’re concerned about that.”

Absolutely. Especially in this era of Twitter and other instantaneous echo chambers of opinion both positive and negative, resilience and a belief in one’s self have to be a mainstay for an artist who also finds herself a celebrity, and there is, after all, an uneasy alliance between the two.

Kristen Stewart, in delving into image and beauty issues reflected upon her earlier pre-fame years, said “If you looked at pictures of me when I was 14 or 15, you couldn’t tell the difference between me and my brothers. I looked like a boy, fully. I really like extremes. I wear jeans and t-shirts and am a total tomboy, but at the same time, when I pull out all the stops [for an event], I want to f–king go for it, polarized in the other direction from my reality.”

And indeed, as the red carpet picture above reveals, Kristen Stewart knows how to pull out all the stops! With her long, flowing hair, she is ultra-feminine. Hard to imagine her indistinguishable from her brothers. And, too, whether we like it or not, we have the Bella Swan image still in mind, though her recent turn at a military guard at Guantanamo in the movie ‘Camp X-Ray’ which premiered at Sundance, did go some distance towards giving us another view of her.

She spoke up about her gorgeous hair, and made some — dare we say? — hair-raising comments. She said, “If I wasn’t an actor, I would definitely do things to my hair. I would cut it more, I would dye it more. At some point I want to do a total boy cut, completely—not a pretty, girly version—like a straight up James Dean haircut.”

And if that were not enough, she decided to give us quite a new image of her in saying “I’m definitely going to shave my head before I die.” And not only that, shared that she “will definitely tattoo my head while it’s shaved before my hair grows back.” Now that’s quite a jarring image!
