Selena Gomez on Her ‘Really Bad Breakup,’ Boyfriend Advice from Katy Perry, Feud with Lorde and More

Selena Gomez opens up about emerging from her ‘really bad breakup’ finding a man who’s not intimidated by her, the feud with Lorde and more in a new interview with Seventeen magazine.

The 21-year-old former Disney star turned pop star lately in the movie ‘Rudderless’ which had its world premiere at Sundance, has her say in a print interview in Seventeen magazine, she has quite a lot to say.

She reflected upon the recent past which has seen her with with some stellar professional achievements including her debut solo album — her first without her longtime band The Scene — debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — and with it a headlining tour.

She said, “This year is when I really started feeling powerful. I had always been the underdog secretly. I was on Disney when it was Miley [Cyrus], the Jonas Brothers, and Demi [Lovato].”

And of course, all of them have gone on to become breakout stars, post-Disney, and most recently the post-Disney, post-Hannah Montana Miley Cyrus has for a time single-handedly virtually dominated all of the talk on pop music.

Selena Gomez continued: “I questioned the way I looked, acted, sang, and wrote. Then I turned 20, went through a really bad breakup, and realized I needed to have ‘Come & Get It’ be amazing. I wanted it all to be me. I’m glad it’s taken me this long to get where I am because now I am ready for it.”

The “really bad breakup” whether she likes it or not, of course, is grabbing headlines. For months ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber was delivering his “Music Monday” songs which all were clearly — and by his own admission — about her. She, for her part, has had little to say — or to sing — about him.

She went on to say, “I actually talked to Katy Perry about guys who are intimidated by strong girls. I haven’t found someone yet who could understand my lifestyle, support it, love me through it, and not be threatened by it. It’s hard. I do think I might scare some guys, because I’m like, ‘I want to change the world! I have dreams! What do you want to do?’ But I only know how to be me.”

The comments are of particular note as Selena Gomez finds herself in the news for many reasons, some welcome and some inadvertent and unwelcome. Days after being spotted on Segways with former boyfriend Justin Bieber and Instagram pictures that he posted seeming to imply the couple was indeed a couple again, now she finds herself the alleged recipient of sexting from him in the aftermath of his latest tabloid antics, the egg throwing incident. And a host of other such rumors largely found to be without concrete, supporting evidence.

And let’s face it, when there’s not talk of breakups and getting back together, there are always the feuds that artists are said to have with one another. Who’s throwing shade today? Who threw shade yesterday? Peace and harmony, after all, are never satisfactory!

Selena Gomez and the 17-year-old breakout pop music star from New Zealand Lorde have found themselves in such a situation with dueling interview comments that would seem to indicate conflict.

For her part, Selena Gomez said of Lorde, “I recently did an interview and they asked me who I thought was up-and-coming and making a difference. I said, ‘She doesn’t like me, but Lorde.’ I’m going to support her whether she likes me or not because I think she’s doing great things. Some day I will see her and we’ll be cool.”
