Attorney Thomas P. Lowe, 58, of Burnsville was suspended indefinitely from the practice of law last week.
That’s not great, but it happens.
He is accused of having an affair with a client he represented in a divorce.
Again, that’s certainly not the best behavior, but unfortunately it happens.
But here is where Lowe’s story becomes different– possibly a ‘first of its kind’ allegation.
While Lowe was having sex with the woman, he billed her for his time.
From the Pioneer Press:
The following month, they began an affair that lasted until March. At various points, Lowe billed the woman for legal services on the dates of their sexual encounters, coding the time as meetings or drafting memos.
Memo drafting indeed.
Lowe eventually broke off the affair and withdrew from representing her. The woman was hospitalized with mental health issues and reported the affair. The Office of Lawyers Responsibility filed a petition for discipline against Lowe last summer. He initially denied the allegations, but later fessed up.
He can apply for his law license back in 15 months.
