‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ First Clip featuring Chris Pine and Kevin Costner

Watch the first official clip from ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,’ with Chris Pine making his debut as the title character in the long-running series based on the work of the late novelist Tom Clancey. Costars Kevin Costner and Nonso Anozie are also featured in the extended scene.

It’s always an occasion when an actor takes on an iconic role such the CIA analyst Jack Ryan. It’s a role that much like James Bond has passed from one actor to another over the years, from Alec Baldwin to Harrison Ford to Ben Affleck. Each has had his own unique interpretation.

It’s been more than a decade since Jack Ryan has graced the silver screen 2002′s ‘The Sum of All Fears.’ That movie was based on Tom Clancey’s novel of the same title, and which saw Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan and Morgan Freeman as CIA Director William Cabot. In light of Clancey’s recent death, it’s all the more regrettable that it has taken so long to see another of these movies open in theaters.

The 33-year-old Chris Pine has been down this road before, as it was up to him to take on another role enshrined in pop culture history, that of Captain James T. Kirk, in the J.J. Abrams reboot of the ‘Star Trek’ franchise.

How does Chris Pine fare this time under the direction of Kenneth Branaugh (‘As You Like it,’ ‘Thor’) — who also costars as the nemesis Viktor Cherevin — in to this latest iteration of the franchise?

In the new clip, descriptively titled ‘First Kill,’ Chris Pine’s Jack Ryan is seen in an extended fight scene that starts quite abruptly. One moment, he’s admiring the magnificent view of the Moscow skyline from his hotel room, and the next moment dodging a well-aimed bullet from the gun of the man whom he thought was on his side, Embee, portrayed by ‘Game of Thrones’ actor Nonso Anozie. It’s a tense struggle, a nail-biter for the viewer.

In the aftermath of this, this “first kill,” Jack Ryan talks about it with his boss, William Harper, portrayed by Kevin Costner. It’s a touching scene which humanizes both characters as is reveals them to be more than well-trained and impassive and seemingly incapable of reflecting upon consequences as can so often be the case in thrillers with a body count.

Although not seen in the clip, the movie also stars Keira Knightley as Cathy Ryan as well as David Paymer and Colm Feore. The movie opens in theaters on on January 17, 2014 at long last. Let’s hope it doesn’t take another 12 years to see Jack Ryan again!
