NBC has released the first promo for ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ online and on television. The current ‘Late Night’ host takes over as host of the long-running program on February 17th.
The new commercial not only introduces the 39-year-old comedian who has hosted ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ for the last several years, but also features archival footage documenting the 60-year-history of the iconic TV program which dates back to 1954 and its creator and first host, Steve Allen.
All of the hosts are featured in the clip –Jack Paar in the late 1950s to early 1960s; Johnny Carson who was the longest running host, from 1962 to 1992; Conan O’Brien, who had the shortest run as host as well as an unfortunate and poorly handled exit by the network which won him much sympathy. Conversely, the returning and current host, Jay Leno, found some disdain and plenty of mockery, notably from another late-night host, Jimmy Kimmel in his “Late Night TV Wars” spoof in the style of Ken Burns’ Civil War documentary.
But through it all, as NBC successfully illustrates in the clip, the show has gone on. It has endured regardless of host, a remarkable feat in and of itself. Very few current programs on television have spanned so many decades; the ‘Tonight Show’ shares such longevity with a few news programs, such as NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ or the few remaining soap operas such as ABC’s ‘General Hospital.’
In the promo, Jimmy Fallon is showcased with some of the memorable moments of his current show, including the ‘Slow Jam the News’ segment with President Obama, a first — and some would argue, a never-should-have been — from a sitting president.
As Jimmy Fallon takes over the show on February 17, it moves back to New York City, its origin, for the first time in more than 40 years.
As always, with such transitions it remains to be seen if Jimmy Fallon and his particular brand of humor will win over the ‘Tonight Show’ demographic even as Seth Meyers, a fellow Saturday Night Live alum, takes over his current show.
An engaging clip, nonetheless, as 60 years of television history speeds by in under a minute, evoking nostalgia of bygone eras and legendary comedians who are no longer with us.
