Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s ‘The Lego Movie’ with its matter-of-fact, no frills title, has been a much anticipated flick. And now the critics are giving high praise for the effort. Check out a roundup of reviews
The co-directing and co-writing team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller who brought us the box office blockbuster ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ have taken the LEGO phenomena — yes, so much more than mere toys, mere building blocks — directly to the big screen in full CGI animation with exciting results, as the rave reviews of critics reveal. A movie which is also an iconic toy — as well as a multimillion dollar product — could easily have become a very long television commercial or an overly sentimental jaunt, but it has become much more than that as we might have expected with Lord and Miller at the helm.
‘The Lego Movie’ voice cast is top-notch studded with Hollywood heavyweights and Oscar winners including Will Ferrell, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, and Charlie Day.
Yes, even the most restrained of critics are applauding the transition from building blocks to matinee entertainment with almost universally rave reviews. Here’s a roundup.
“….Andy Warhol would have been knocked sideways by The Lego Movie. The new animation from Warner Bros. takes art and commerce and clicks them together as naturally and satisfyingly as a pair of plastic bricks on their way to becoming a castle or spaceship. Never before have I felt less like a film was selling me a product, and then left the cinema more desperate to fill my house with the product it wasn’t selling…..” — The Telegraph
“…“The Lego Movie” understands how fans interact with the brand and answers with a mile-a-minute geekstravaganza that immerses kids — and the adults who only think they outgrew their old playsets — at ground level with the tiny plastic bricks. Just as they did with “21 Jump Street” and “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” before this most ambitious undertaking, co-helmers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller irreverently deconstruct the state of the modern blockbuster and deliver a smarter, more satisfying experience in its place, emerging with a fresh franchise for others to build upon….” — Variety
“…It’s a non-stop blast from beginning to end, jam-packed with a wacky irreverence, dazzling state-of-the-art CGI (courtesy of Animal Logic) and a pitch-perfect voice cast headed by Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Will Ferrell…..” — Hollywood Reporter
“…..The film goes in some wonderfully unexpected directions and takes real storytelling risks. I cannot say how everyone will respond to its narrative left turns and unexpected poignancy, but they elevate to the film far above a glorified toy commercial. The Lego Movie may in fact be brilliant…..” — Forbes
“…[A] degree of cynicism is probably warranted, considering just how closely the movie could resemble a feature-length commercial (and to be sure, whole aisles of toy stores are currently being flooded by the stuff). But it turns out that “The Lego Movie” is an absolute blast—a whip-smart, surprisingly emotional family film where the toy property is seen less as a concrete template than a tool for seemingly limitless potential……” — The Playlist
And if the rave reviews were not enough, multiple media outlets including Variety report that a sequel is already under development at the studio, Warner Bros, and Jared Stern (‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’) and Michelle Morgan have been tapped to write the screenplay. So we will have The LEGO Movie’ and another, and after that perhaps still another! Meanwhile check out the trailer below.
