Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr: Interview with David Letterman on The Beatles on ‘Ed Sullivan Show’ 50th Anniversary (Video)

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr spoke with David Letterman in a rare joint interview for the 50th anniversary commemoration of The Beatles historic appearance on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show,’ a television special on CBS. The two surviving members of the legendary group returned to where it all began in America.

It was on February 9, 1964 that they made an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show before a television audience of 74 million. The CBS special is appropriately named ‘The Beatles: The Night That Changed America’ to chronicle the iconic moment in history that it was. The historic performance was but two days after their arrival in America at JFK Airport.

In retrospect it has been called the British Invasion. The Beatles were thus the first invaders. But back then they were simply that group from Liverpool, England originally comprised of John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. They had a surge in popularity but they were not yet household names in the U.S. though that would soon change.

And what songs did The Beatles perform that night on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ in 1964? Five songs that are now classics; ‘All My Loving,’ ‘Till There Was You,’ ‘She Loves You,’ ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ and ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand.’

Now half a century later and much pop cultural and music history now enshrined in the past, the two survivors, Ringo Starr, 73 and Paul McCartney, 71, returned to the very same Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, where ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ originates. While separately they have both been back to the venue for ‘Late Show,’ they both reminisced about that night of their live performance on the 1960s variety show that so many were watching that night.

The Sunday night television special wraps up a full week of special commemoration which began with the nightly performances of Beatles classics on ‘Late Show’ with several artists including The Flaming Lips and Sean Lennon, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Broken Bells and Lenny Kravitz among others.

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr’s full interview will be a part of the television special. In the meantime, preview clips have been released with you can see below. Check back for the replay after the broadcast.
