Jesse Eisenberg had been cast as Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder’s forthcoming reboot dubbed ‘Batman vs. Superman.’ To say this casting news was not well received by the Internet is an understatement. It’s drawn controversy, derision, parody, mockery, belly-aching, dismay and disbelief.
By now it’s virtually a ritual. The casting of Ben Affleck as Batman for this same Zack Snyder reboot sparked immediate backlash, and so did Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. In each case, the actors were at variance with the traditional perception of the characters who we must remember, started out as comic book images.
Henry Cavill as Superman in Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel,’ the reboot of the franchise did not win praise and applause either. But along the way, the movie-going world learned to settle down and love Henry Cavill as Superman after initial consternation even as critics remained somewhat divided.
So here we go again, another actor cast in an iconic role and another backlash on Twitter and other social media. But is it warranted? This time it’s the 30-year-old Jesse Eisenberg. He is best known for his portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, in David Fincher’s'The Social Network,’ and getting a Best Actor Oscar nod and much critical acclaim for his effort. But yet the question is raised. Does he have the gravitas to portray one of the most well-known villains of the DC universe?
Jesse Eisenberg has the unswerving confidence of Zack Snyder who said in the official announcement, noting Lex Luthor as “the most notorious of Superman’s rivals,” that his is “beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain” and adding that his “intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman.”
Snyder goes on to say, “Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”
But the Internet had other ideas. The likes of Bryan Cranston, ‘Breaking Bad’s’ unforgettable Walter White-Heisenberg was a dream contender — or more aptly put a contender suitable to wreak nightmares of a true villain. Joaquin Phoenix was another such contender in the minds of some.
Also announced — but without the controversy and uproar — was the Oscar-winning British actor Jeremy Irons who will portray Batman and Bruce Wayne loyal and trusted aid, the butler Alfred. So bit by bit the cast of the still-untitled movie — which will open in theaters on May 6, 2016 — is taking shape. Its script is by David S. Goyer, with whom Zack Snyder co-wrote the story. We already know of the returning characters from ‘Man of Steel’ — Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, and Diane Lane as Clark Kent’s mother — and more casting news, of course, is on the way.
Meanwhile, the controversy rages on somewhat like a participatory sport as it is still a long time before the movie will grace the silver screen. And in this day an age, this means that many take to social media with some entertaining results. Check out a sampling below.
