Bruno Mars Talks Super Bowl Halftime Show, Backlash, Critics on ‘Ellen DeGeneres’ (Video)

Bruno Mars opened up about his Super Bowl halftime performance and more in an interview on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show.’ He spoke out about critics and detractors and offered some inspiring words for aspiring music artists.

The 28-year-old multi-Grammy winner Bruno Mars had plenty to say in the aftermath of his record-setting halftime show at Super Bowl XLVIII which featured The Red Hot Chili Peppers. It became the most-watched ever of Super Bowl halftime performances, outpacing previous performers including Beyonce and Madonna.

In reflecting upon that success, Bruno Mars, told host Ellen DeGeneres how he made the decision to perform when asked, ““I’ve only got two albums, so I don’t have like a legacy or anything like that, but tomorrow’s not promised, so I had to go for it.”

Ellen pointed out the criticism that he had received prior to the performance from those who did not think he was enough of a superstar performer for the Super Bowl, and in particular, some pointed comments in a New York Times article noting that Bruno Mars couldn’t possible be a music superstar since, after all, “he’s not in the tabloids, he doesn’t have a fragrance, and simply because he’s not ready.”

Bruno Mars spoke up on that one saying, “That was by far the most disgusting thing I think I’ve heard. Not because it was taking a shot at me but I was just thinking about aspiring young musicians who want to do this.”

He went on to say, “Any young aspiring musician out there if music is what you want to do, music is what you love, your passion, it doesn’t take a fragrance, it’s not about the tabloids, its about you putting in the work, practicing everyday… and hopefully one day you write a song the whole world wants to get down to.

Continuing his exhortation, he said, “And I promise you, one day you will have your moment to shine and you’re going to have a lot of people who are going to tell you can’t do it. I promise you, if you sing and put your heart and soul into it, one day you will be sitting next to Ellen DeGeneres and talk about how you broke records and rocked the Super Bowl!”

At this point he had the studio audience giving him enthusiastic applause. Seizing the triumphant moment, he rushed into the aisles literally embracing excited fans as the ‘Rocky’ theme played. It was a television moment. We’ve seen so many stars respond to criticism, but Bruno Mars took the opportunity to inspire others.

Later in the show he took part in a hidden camera prank for Ellen, with an unsuspecting nurse. You can see the reply of both segments below.
