Joe Jonas of the recently split Jonas Brothers opens up on losing his virginity at 20, secret hookups with fellow stars and fans, smoking marijuana for the first time with Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato and many other candid topics in a revealing interview with New York Magazine.
It marks the first solo interview that the 24-year-old Joe Jonas has given since he and his brothers Kevin and Nick Jonas split as a band. He goes a long way towards pulling back the curtain of the squeaky-clean Disney image of the Jonas Brothers who were raised by a pastor and who famously wore “promise rings” indicating they would abstain from sex until marriage.
He speaks of the challenges and the pressures of their Disney-created and Disney-driven fame which began in the aftermath of the Vanessa Hudgens nude photo scandal. He said of it, “We didn’t want to disappoint anyone—our parents, our fans, our employers—so we put incredible pressure on ourselves, the kind of pressure that no teenager should be under. We were just kids. That’s the reality. We were frightened little kids. So you got all this responsibility that’s foisted upon you and you’re expected to be perfect.”
He spoke about what it was like, as Disney creations to resist the temptation when fans were smuggled into their hotel rooms. “For the record, we didn’t have the traditional rock-and-roll experience. We were kids working with Disney, so finding a girl in our hotel room didn’t feel like an open invitation. This isn’t 1986, and I’m not in a hair-metal band. It felt like a problem we had to solve without it getting us into trouble.”
He did eventually become sexually active. He said, “I lost my virginity when I was 20. I did other stuff before then, but I was sexually active at 20. I’m glad I waited for the right person, because you look back and you go, “That girl was batsh*t crazy. I’m glad I didn’t go there.”
He spoke of dating others in the business, saying “[I]t was exciting. In the back of my mind, it felt special to date someone who was also famous. But I wanted to keep things quiet out of respect for my fans, because we had a large female audience, and I didn’t want to rub my relationships in their faces. Some of the girls I dated just didn’t get that.”
He did name a few names, among them, Demi Lovato with whom he had a longtime friendship, but he said they dated for a month. He said of her, “I really got to know her and got to see the ins and outs of what she was struggling with, like drug abuse. I felt like I needed to take care of her, but at the same time I was living a lie, because I wasn’t happy but felt like I had to stay in it for her, because she needed help. I couldn’t express any of that, of course, because I had a brand to protect.”
He also dated Ashley Greene when he was 20 years old, of whom he said she was “my first serious relationship” and that they lived together as a couple for nearly a year.
He did not mention former girlfriend Taylor Swift by name, but spoke in general terms about ex-girlfriends, saying “I genuinely don’t have any resentment against any of my exes. So I’m not going to disparage anyone I was in a relationship with — only I might put it in my music a little bit, and hint at it, and tease it here and there, just enough for the fans and the people who really know the story. But I’m not going to openly say, ‘Yeah, actually, this person is a b*tch, and she did this to me.’ I don’t feel the need to do that to sell records.”
He spoke of marijuana saying, “The first time I smoked weed was with Demi [Lovato] and Miley [Cyrus]. I must have been 17 or 18. They kept saying, “Try it! Try it!” so I gave it a shot, and it was all right. I don’t even smoke weed that often anymore.”
He also spoke about the breakup of the Jonas Brothers, and their meeting which they had alluded to publicly during their ‘Good Morning America’ interview. He said that it was a long time coming before they acknowledged the dynamics and spoke openly.
He said, “There were a lot of dysfunctional things going on. The music was getting stale, too, because we’d write it and record it and then it would sit around for a long time. After that meeting, we took a night to think about things, met again, and nothing was resolved, so we decided to take a week and think about it. Then we canceled the tour. It would have been really tough for me to go on a last-hurrah tour. I didn’t care about the money; I just wanted to figure out the right, healthy way for us to be good as a family.”
The full interview is here . He has much to say as Joe Jonas, the 24-year-old man, now married to Blanda Eggenschwiler, looking back at his final teen years which were spent in the public and Disney-controlled spotlight. Among other things he speaks about his solo studio album which was never released. Yes, the oldest Jonas has much to share now that he is not one third of a teen heartthrob band!
