See the first trailer for Akiva Goldsman’s ‘Winter’s Tale,’ starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly and Will Smith, in a fantastical, supernatural and romantic epic.
The highly anticipated screen adaptation was written, directed and co-produced by Akiva Goldsman who won an Oscar for his screenplay for ‘A Beautiful Mind.’ He makes his directorial debut with the upcoming movie which is based on the critically acclaimed literary novel of the same title by Mark Helprin which was published in 1983.
‘Winter’s Tale’ is a story told on a grand scale in a New York City of an imagined past, the early 20th century, and present day; a world similar to our own but strikingly different. It is mythic, fantastical, with time travel accepted as a given, as is a character who happens to be a white horse who acts as a protector and guardian angel. It’s quite surprising that it has taken more than thirty years for this epic tale to reach the silver screen.
The bare bones of the narrative — which from the trailer seems to be the means by which the 700+ pages of the novel’s gorgeously descriptive prose has been distilled into a feature film — focus on the protagonist, Peter Lake a mechanic by trade turned member of a burglary ring by necessity, portrayed by Irish actor Colin Farrell (‘Total Recall, ‘In Bruges’) and a developing love story, as per chance he falls in love with a young woman who was initially one of his robbery victims. She is Beverly Penn, portrayed by Jessica Brown Findlay (‘Downton Abbey’). Tragically, when he meets her, she is an invalid who is dying of consumption.
Russell Crowe portrays the gang leader, Pearly Soames, who is in hot pursuit of Peter Lake, through his merciless henchman Romeo Tan portrayed by Kevin Corrigan (‘Grounded For Life’). The trailer reveals scenes of the past intercut with scenes in a present-day Manhattan which finds Colin Farrell’s character trying to recall his past as he is obsessed with its relics.
The movie boasts an impressive supporting cast, including Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint, Ripley Sobo, Mckayla Twiggs, and Will Smith (who is not seen in the trailer) as Judge.
‘Winter’s Tale’ opens in theaters on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2014. The first trailer is below!
