Michelle Pfeiffer Reveals She Was once in a Breatharianism Cult

Michelle Pfeiffer reveals that she was in a breatharianism cult in the years before her rise to fame. She shares the story of how she was able to escape from the controlling individuals and their influence upon her.

The 55-year-old Oscar-nominated actress has brought glamour, beauty and acting prowess to many iconic movies over the years from ‘The Fabulous Baker Boys’ to ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ to ‘Batman Returns’ which saw her as a particularly memorable Catwoman. She currently co-stars in the French action comedy film ‘The Family’ with Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones, and Dianna Agron.

Michelle Pfeiffer made the surprising revelation in a new interview with the UK Sunday Telegraph Stella Magazine. She said that she fell under the influence of a “controlling couple” who became essentially her personal trainers in the days when she was a 20-year-old newcomer in Hollywood. As practitioners of breatharianism — the believe that humans can survive without food or water but rather subside on energy — she said she was put on a special diet “nobody can adhere to.”

She went on to say: “I wasn’t living with them but I was there a lot and they were always telling me I needed to come more. I had to pay for all the time I was there, so it was financially very draining.”

As for how she got out of the cult, she said it came about when she met a fellow actor Peter Horton, who would later become her first husband. She was helping him do research for his role in a movie about the Moonies, as the followers of Rev. Sun Myung Moon — leader of a particularly destructive, well-known cult — were called. She said that in researching she came to understand that she herself was in a cult. She said, “We were talking with an ex-Moonie and he was describing the psychological manipulation and I just clicked.”

From what is the usual promo for an upcoming movie, Michelle Pfeiffer has taken the discussion to an important and crucial topic of cults and the destruction that can wreak upon individuals. It’s a topic that does not get the attention it needs.

It’s quite fortunate that she was able to have the realization that she was in a cult and the courage to get out. We can look back historically — as well as presently — and there are so many who have not been so fortunate. Her story is testament of the sad and perhaps uncomfortable truth that any of us could be manipulated and controlled by a cult leader. Such leaders are masters of persuasion and mind control.

In the interview, she also discussed the usual topics, including whether or not she would consider plastic surgery which up until now she has not undergone, but said “it’s really hard to say never.”

But it’s her revelation about cults and her cautionary tale that is most memorable and instructive.
