Man sentenced to probation, 100 speeches

The Minnetrista man whose daughter died after his vehicle plunged into the icy water of Lake Minnetonka last January was sentenced to five years probation and 100 speeches by Hennepin County District Court Judge Jay Quam Wednesday.

Jonathan Markle was found guilty of criminal vehicular homicide for the death of his infant daughter Tabitha. Markle was sentenced to 57 months in prison, but, if he successfully completes five years probation and delivers 100 speeches on drunk driving, he will not have to serve that time. In his speeches, Markle is expected to address the peril he, his wife, and his older daughter were in when the car plunged through the ice, as well as the death of his youngest daughter.

Markle was driving his family home from dinner when he took a shortcut over thin ice. Markle told investigators he had two beers at dinner, but blood tests showed a blood alcohol level of 0.13. Quam also ordered Markle to write letters to two passersby who helped free his family members from the frigid water. Neither Markle nor the passersby were able to free Tabitha from her car seat. She was later freed by emergency responders. She died three days later.

Assistant Hennepin County Attorney Deborah Russell had recommended that Markle spend one year in the Hennepin County Workhouse with work release rights.

Markle plans to appeal an earlier ruling of Quam’s, in which the judge found that drawing Markle’s blood was constitutional and the test results were admissible evidence, according to Chuck Laszewski, spokesman for the Hennepin County Attorney’s office.
