‘Maleficent’ Trailer (Video): Angelina Jolie as the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Villain

See the first teaser trailer for ‘Maleficent,’ starring Angelina Jolie as the title character, the evil fairy and villain of Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty.’ Get the first look at her stunning malevolence.

The highly anticipated live-action dark fantasy is a retelling of the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ fairytale through the eyes of the evil fairy who causes death and mayhem in a sudden terrifying turn. She first appeared in Disney’s original animated classic, where she declared herself to be the ‘Mistress of All Evil.’

The movie marks the directorial debut of the Robert Stromberg, the Oscar-winning production designer of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Avatar.’ It was written by Linda Woolverton (‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘The Lion King’). This should give some reassurance that the transition of this Disney animated character to a live-action film will be faithfully detailed and atmospheric and from the looks of the trailer, this seems to be the case.

It’s no doubt, ‘Maleficent’ is a nightmare inducing villain, as she is one who took an evil turn in revenge or in the language of fairy tales, her pure heart became stone cold. To see this animated character in a live action movie, and most especially portrayed by none other than Angelina Jolie has built much anticipation for the new movie.

What does this new teaser show us? Embodying The Mistress of All Evil, Angelina Jolie appears but briefly as Princess Aurora, portrayed by Elle Fanning, speaks to her, summoning her, telling her ‘Don’t be afraid.’ From the shadows we hear her voice, ‘I am not afraid.’ To which Aurora says, ‘Then come out.’ Maleficent merely replies, “Then you’ll be afraid.”

We see the whirling imagery of the iconic thorny branches from the animated original, a darkened sky. Finally, we see a glimpse of her face, sharply chiseled cheekbones, the iciness of her expression and suddenly just as quickly as it began, it’s over. It’s just enough to hope to see more, and we must wait for the next trailer.

Co-stars include Sam Riley, Sharlto Copleyy, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville. ‘Maleficent’ opens in theaters on May 30, 2014. The trailer is below.
