Lady Gaga Sings in SNL Monologue on How to Get ‘Cheap Applause’

Lady Gaga, both the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live, devoted her opening monologue to a Broadway style song-and-dance number on to ways to get cheap applause. With a willing audience, it was mission accomplished!

For the 27-year-old pop music superstar it was a memorable takeoff of her own hit single, ‘Applause,’ from her recently released album, ARTPOP. It revealed that she, who has made no secret of her desire for fame — the song has the oft repeated line ‘I live for the applause, applause, applause’ and she did call her sophomore album ‘The Fame Monster’ after all — was not adverse to mocking that same desire.

With that that intent, Lady Gaga strolled out on the SNL stage in a silver fringe-skirted chorus girl style costume and won her first round of applause by pointing out that she grew up in New York City. “Give it up for New York!” she added.

She then proceeded to explain the two types of applause — applause you earn, and “cheap applause” by pandering to the audience. “I’m a fan of both.” she said. “And you know what? I wrote a song about it. Would you like to hear it?” To another round of applause, of course.

She proceeded to sing a Broadway musical version of her aforementioned hit ‘Applause’ with new lyrics, reminding everyone that, while she may be a pop star, she has an impressive voice and wouldn’t be lost on the musical stage. She had plenty of backup dancers, both male and female.

She interspersed the new lyrics with a few spoken interjections to get the requisite “cheap applause” with the likes of “Put your hands together for if you want to end childhood obesity!” And And thus she collected round after round of applause, even as she interacted with the SNL crew posed as members of honorable professions — “Give it up for first responders!” — mingled among the studio audience.

She ended with a rendition of some reworked lyrics set to the iconic Frank Sinatra song, ‘New York, New York’ on her dream to host SNL. Obviously, more applause and by now well-earned, especially as she cleverly mashed it up when with a sung rendition of the famous line ‘Live from New york, it’s Saturday Night Live.’

Lady Gaga’s artful send-up of her own obsession with fame and applause seems destined to become a classic in the show’s history. Check out the full video below!
