Lady Gaga’s album, ‘ARTPOP,’ has had the gamut of reactions from critics. Reviews are positive, negative and lukewarm. Find out what’s being said about the long-awaited third album from the pop music superstar.
The 27-year-old native New Yorker Lady Gaga has brought her usual fanfare and edginess in letting the world know she’s got a new album — the followup to ‘Born This Way’ — from the first announcement of lead single, ‘Applause,’ and debut live performance at the MTV WMAs to the unveiling of cover art by celebrated artist Jeff Koons veiled via a Twitter campaign “#iHeartARTPOP. There was also the ARTPOP app.
What has been the result after launching ‘Applause’ as the lead single? It was followed by the explicit R. Kelly duet ‘Do What U Want’ celebrating the carnal life. Along the way there were the ‘promotional’ singles including the quasi-ethereal ‘Venus’ that paid homage to the goddess and the planet all in one song. She teased with some live performances of other tracks on the album, most notably her emotional, tearful performance of ‘Dope’ at the inaugural YouTube Music Awards. What about the album as a totality? Soon after it leaked to the Internet it was streaming on iTunes for all to hear, officially.
What do the music critics say? Here’s a roundup.
“….”Musically, there’s a lot going on: it’s like wandering drunk around a vast, labyrinthine club, and peering into a disorienting series of darkened rooms in which she tries on various musical genres as if they were hats. She doesn’t do anything wildly original with them, but she has fun.”…” — The Telegraph
“…One can easily imagine the songs as a sturdy vehicle for her delightfully over-the-top stage shows, and in small doses, they’ll fuel the Little Monsters on the dance floor. But given the scarcity of sing-along choruses, the rhythmic pounding and the absence of nuance in her powerhouse voice, the overall effect is exhausting if you’re listening to the album all the way through….” — USA Today
“…As pop, the album is a well-executed and entertaining tour of Gaga’s tried-and-true tricks. But as art, it falls short when it comes to one basic function: making an impression….– Entertainment Weekly
“….”Coherently channeling R&B, techno, disco and rock music as a pop artist while discussing sex, drugs, lust, God, fame and creativity, Lady Gaga has offered fans her most sonically and lyrically diverse album to date”ARTPOP” is imperfect, but so is its creator. It is a complicated album that should be applauded (pun intended) for inspiring interpretation, as well as telling fans that it’s also okay to just dance….” — Billboard
“…”As it careers to a luminous climax, you briefly forget that what you’re listening to is patently not what Lady Gaga claims it is. That said, nor is ‘ARTPOP’ the car crash her detractors are willing it to be. It’s a decent, if flawed, pop album, its good bits good enough to keep her filling stadiums as big as the gulf between her ideas and her music.”…” The Guardian
“….Gaga doesn’t make music for pondering or reflection of any kind. It’s more geared toward propulsion, aiming for the dance floor, regardless of what genre helps get her there….As it turns out, Gaga’s new music owes a lot more to pop than to art. It’s catchier than it is deep, with songs more eager to knock you out than to bore far inside….” New York Daily News
“… Though her music strutted into the mainstream, her personality was anything but. Titling her third studio album “Artpop” suggested she was about to fulfill her promise as a complicated, hit-making weirdo. But “Artpop” disappoints — a major letdown from an artist who once hinted that she wouldn’t be contained by genre, gender or convention….” — Chicago Tribune
ARTPOP which is released via Streamline and Interscope Records, has a grand scale launch party, dubbed an ‘artRave’ event, in New York City streamed over the Internet via VEVO. Lady Gaga’s “Little Monsters” everywhere can be in virtual attendance.
After that’s up to the dollars and the cents. Will the album debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and other charts around the world? After its initial global debut — and most especially after her long furlough brought on by her broken hip that halted her previous world tour, the Born this Way Ball — no doubt Lady Gaga will hit the road and bring ARTPOP to arenas in cities near and far.
