Tina Fey’s Saturday Night Live Opening Monologue Introduces New Cast Members (Video)

Tina Fey was the host of Saturday Night Live’s 39th season premiere. Watch her opening monologue introducing six new cast members. But there’s a catch; they had to dance on stage in gold lame outfits! Such is life for newbies!

Thirty-nine years of SNL has seen many a cast member come and go. Tina Fey herself spent nine years on the show and has gone on to multi-Emmy winning success with her ’30 Rock’ comedy series. So what might the future hold for these six new members? Who among them will become the next television or movie star? Which one will create the next iconic character? The next Church Lady? The next Wayne of ‘Wayne’s World’? Or Stuart Smalley?

Big shoes to fill? As we all began our ritual of complaining that the show is not as good as it once was, Tina Fey had all six new cast members decked out in gold lame outfits, performing as backup dancers. Think of it as hazing as no doubt they did!

The new cast members are Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Mike O’Brien, Noel Wells, and Brooks Wheelan. These six replace three departing cast members: Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis and Fred Armisen. It begs the question. Does it take two cast members to replace each departing one, we wonder?

They may have sailed through the dance routine, but their rite of passage was not yet over. They next had to differentiate themselves from members of the band that was the musical guest that night, Arcade Fire. The game show spoof, appropriately titled “New Cast Member Or Arcade Fire?,” featured returning cast member Kenan Thompson as the host.

Their days of interchangeability with members of an indie rock band no doubt they hope are over. Those six new members whose names and biography details are largely new to us; Beck Bennett (AT&T’s “It’s Not Complicated” commercials), John Milhiser (Serious Lunch comedy group), Kyle Mooney (Good Neighbor comedy group), Mike O’Brien (“7 Minutes in Heaven”), Noel Wells (“Forev”), and Brooks Wheelan (“CollegeHumor”). Yet we may find among them the next comedy superstars. And we can remember back when they were decked out in gold lame dancing behind Tina Fey!
