Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are married! The longtime couple tied the knot in a courthouse ceremony after famously delaying their wedding until the legalization of gay marriage in California.
The 32-year-old “Veronica Mars” star Kristen Bell and the 38-year-old “Parenthood” star Dax Shepard were first engaged in 2009. As years went by — as they awaited marriage equality — they became the parents of a little girl, Lincoln, who is now seven months old.
TMZ was the first to report of the quiet wedding which has since been reported by other media. The longtime couple did away with tradition and got married at the Beverly Hills County Clerk Office. They quote an unnamed eyewitness source who says the couple had shown up to get their license and took up the clerk’s offer to marry them on the spot.
Kirsten Bell gave an often-quoted interview to The Advocate, in which she made clear that the delay in marriage was in solidarity, noting she did not feel it was “appropriate taking advantage of a right” which, at that time was denied to gays and lesbians. She added, “Dax and I have talked about it a lot, and this issue is very important to both of us. We’re just standing up for what we believe in. Period.”
The couple became officially engaged again — this time via Twitter! — in the aftermath of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision which overturned DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act, thus leading to the overturning of Proposition 8 in California which had barred same-sex marriage for the past few years.
At that time Kirsten Bell Tweeted: “@daxshepard1 will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove”
Dax Shepard Tweeted in response: “DOMA is dead. Prop 8 is dead. Now let’s bring my big, gay marriage to @IMKristenBell to Life!!!!
As Twitter was where the couple so publicly reaffirmed their engagement perhaps this will be where they confirm their wedding especially as Twitter — along with Instagram — has become the norm for news of breakups, engagements and weddings. TMZ reported that a photographer was present so perhaps we might also see some wedding pictures!
