Federal judge joins ‘Mockingbird’ cast

Lawyers love Atticus Finch, Harper Lee’s paragon of civic virtue and fatherly love.

Fans seeking more than the print or black-and-white movie version of this classic American tale are in for a treat. The Virginia Repertory Theatre opens its Signature Season in Richmond on Sept. 27 with To Kill a Mockingbird.

Judge Roger L. Gregory, of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, will reprise his role as Reverend Sykes. Gregory was in Virginia Rep’s last production of Mockingbird in 2003. Adrian Rieder also returns as Atticus Finch and Glen Allen fifth-grader Molly Nugent will play Scout Finch.

Virginia Rep is joining with Leadership Metro Richmond and its members from the legal community to support matinee performances for middle and high school students, in order to deepen their understanding of the American justice system. Virginia jurists who will join student matinees to facilitate “talkbacks” with the play’s cast include Justice Cleo E. Powell of the Supreme Court of Virginia, and Chief Judge Catherine Hammond of Henrico Circuit Court.

Director Rusty Wilson describes the play as a “story about a man who chooses the hard right, rather than the easy wrong, teaching his children by example, not just by words. I love that we have a cast of players who will not only tell the story, but witness it as well.” Wilson will “tell the story through the lens of memory, and the traditional spiritual music of the time.”

The play will run through Oct. 20, 2013, at the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre, 114 West Broad Street, in Richmond. More information and tickets are available here.
