$30 million settlement in case of faulty heart devices

A $30 million settlement has been reached in a case alleging the knowing sale of faulty heart devices, the Department of Justice announced.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office of Minnesota and the Justice Department handled the case. Boston Scientific Corp. and Guidant LLC, Guidant Sales LLC and Cardiac Pacemakers Inc., its subsidiaries, agreed to the settlement, ending more than five years of litigation in Minnesota federal court.

The devices at issue in the case were implantable defibrillators designed to help patients with irregular heartbeats. Some of the devices had a defect which caused them to short circuit. The government alleged that Guidant knew of the problem but continued to sell the faulty devices from 2003 to 2005.
