New rules expand bar exam pool of questions, allow pro bono from house counsel

New rules for admission to the bar of Minnesota are now posted on the court’s website.  Rule 2 has been amended to follow the bar exam questions of the Uniform Bar Examination. That rule expands the pool of available topics for essay questions. It applies to bar examinations in February 2014 and after.

Rule 10 has been amended to allow lawyers practicing under a house counsel license or a temporary house counsel license to do pro bono work through an approved legal services provider.

Additionally, the rules of criminal procedure have been changed to provide a procedure for certification of cases as petty misdemeanors.   In cases requiring the defendant’s consent to certification, the judge must advise the client of the right to a public defender for a misdemeanor.
