The death of Robin Williams at age 63 has stunned the world and in the aftermath his long and storied career is being celebrated and revisited. See a roundup of some of the final interviews the iconic star gave.
Sudden and sad news broke on August 11th that Robin Williams was found unresponsive and pronounced dead in his Marin County, California home, in a suspected suicide. As tributes pour in, it seems all the more fitting to reexamine some of the final words of Williams himself, speaking from the vantage point of already a legendary career which by no means was over, as he leaves now four unreleased movies as well as a sequel to the iconic ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ which was under development.
In an interview with Pat Harvey of CBS2 Los Angeles (first video below) Robin Williams spoke about his three children, expressing pride in all of them. He also opened up about his longtime battle with alcoholism and contrasted it with his years of sobriety. At the time, he was in the midst of the short-lived CBS series The Crazy Ones.
He said in part, “I’ve done the research on playing an alcoholic.” He later observed he was more “focused on the present.” He went on to say, “When I did Mork and Mindy, it was just sort of a crazy ride, and I was on pretty much everything but skates. But now, to be here and doing this is to appreciate it and participating, saying ‘what can I bring to it, and how can I help’.”
Robin Williams was also interviewed on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (second video below) in which he opened up about his past use of cocaine, speaking of the serious and dark topic in his inimitable comedic fashion.
In his last interview with Extra Robin Williams spoke about his daughter Zelda Rae Williams. He had posted an image on Instagram of himself with her as a young child in tribute to her recent 25th birthday. It was the last picture he put on social media before his death. The video of the interview can be seen here.
