The first trailer of ‘The Theory of Everything’ has hit the Web and gives the first glimpse of Eddie Redmayne portraying Stephen Hawking in the screen adaptation directed by James Marsh of the legendary physicist’s biography, ‘Travelling to Infinity,’ written by his wife Jane Hawking.
There has been much anticipation over this movie, as it is the first such big screen drama about Stephen Hawking. As noted, it is based on his wife’s book about him, ‘Travelling to Infinity.’ Adapted for the screen by Anthony McCarten , it chronicles Hawking’s early days at Cambridge, prior to becoming stricken with ALS. It is in these years that he met his future wife, a fellow student at then known as Jane Wide. The narrative further covers his rising success as a world renown physicist and his important contributions to the field even as he copes with the deleterious effects of the disease.
The British Tony winning actor and singer Eddie Redmayne is best known for his portrayal of as Marius Pontmerc in Les Miserables, both the Broadway hit as well as the movie. Portraying Jane Hawking is British actress Felicity Jones, well known for her role in ‘The Worst Witch,’ and a costar in ‘“The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ As is always the case in these circumstances, these actors are tasked with the challenge of portraying living people and there will always be discussion, debate and contention over such portrayals.
The movie will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and the trailer (video below) is our first glimpse. It is already generating Oscar buzz and, as such is virtually tailor made for such speculation. A Best Actor or Best Actress nomination for either of the lead actors would not be a surprise, nor the rest of the slate, Best Picture, Best Director, etc.
It’s definitely a film to keep in mind as anticipation builds to its premiere. But for now we must remain contented with the tidbits we see in the trailer.
‘The Theory of Everything’ also stars David Thewlis and Emily Watson. After its world premiere in Toronto it will open in theaters on November 7th.
