Shailene Woodley Covers ‘Vanity Fair’ Talks Dating Co-Stars, Why She almost Quit Acting and More

Shailene Woodley graces the cover of Vanity Fair Magazine,’ and speaks out on a range of topics including whether she would consider dating a co-star. ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ star also reveals that she considered quitting acting.

Once again, the breakthrough star, 22-yaer-old Shailene Woodley has much to say. This time she is gracing Vanity Fair and thus continuing a successful run of covering some of the top print magazines, which lately have included the likes of New York Magazine.

She is the co-star of the screen adaptation of John Green’s novel, ‘The Fault in Our Stars,’ alongside Ansel Elgort, in the beautiful but tragic teenage love story that has gone on to become a box office success in just its first week of release.

But a few months earlier, Woodley already established herself as a star to be reckoned with in ‘Divergent’ the first of a trilogy of movies based on the bestselling YA dystopian thriller of the same title by Veronica Roth. Her portrayal of the strong female protagonist has drawn notice.

Surprisingly in retrospect, she she tells Vanity Fair that she almost quit acting after having received much critical acclaim for her role in George Clooney’s ‘The Descendants.’

She said, “Somebody came to me and said, ‘I can’t wait to see what you do next.’ I took that as pressure — that I had to live up to somebody else’s expectations. There were a few months where I was like, ‘I don’t want to act anymore.’ And then I got over it and realized it’s none of my business what other people think of me.”

Thankfully for her legions of fans Shailene Woodley had a change of heart. Now, on the other side, with global fame in a major movie franchise, it almost begs the expectation. Will she date a co-star in this or some other movie? She said,”“I’m never going to say never. I love acting, but I also really love nature and most actors don’t want to get dirty.”

Woodley spoke of Miles Teller, her co-star in ‘Divergent’ as well as the upcoming ‘The Spectacular Now,’ saying, “I look at Miles and, like, I’m sort of Julia Roberts in the same way she is to George [Clooney]. Their relationship I could see being our relationship in 20 years, and that really is special.”

And speaking of George Clooney, she sees him as a mentor and has high words of praise, “He has been an angel in my life for many reasons. He knew everyone’s name on set. He treated everyone as an equal and everyone got his warmth.”

She also reflected upon the possibilities of fame and what one can do with it, saying, “As much as this industry is a platform for talking about big issues, there’s also so many f-ckin’ issues. You could talk about Russia, or Argentina, or fracking, or G.M.O.s.”

She went on to say, “Maybe the only thing that I’m supposed to do is just show up and be me in every moment. Because I do feel like one of my gifts is to be open and lovely — simple things like smiling at strangers and having kind, small interactions. I think that is what’s going to ultimately shift things.”
