Colbie Caillat’s lyric video for her new single, “Try” has had its premiere. It is a powerful visual narrative, featuring numerous celebrities and fans who appear without makeup.
Not only did Colbie Caillat release the new song, and its groundbreaking song, ‘Try,’ but she also followed Beyonce’s example and released a surprise 5-song EP, ‘Gypsy Heart Side A,’ of which the new song is the lead single. the full ‘Gypsy Heart’ album is due later this year. ‘Try’ was co-written and produced by Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmonds and is a free download on iTunes.
But for now the lyric video is getting a great deal of buzz. There’s nothing left to ambiguity as it opens with an onscreen message in which she tells the viewer in part “I asked everyone to shoot themselves wearing little to no makeup – whatever they were most comfortable with. Myself included.”
And yes, there are lots of stars who followed suit. Among them, Kelly Osbourne, Hayden Panettiere, Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow, Katharine McPhee, Sara Bareilles, Natasha Bedingfield, Ingrid Michaelson, Christina Perri, Hillary Scott (of Lady Antebellum) and Amy Smart among others.
She told TIME in an interview, “‘Try’ is written from my personal experience having so many insecurities, as people do and I think women especially do. We see people looking perfect on TV and compare ourselves to them.” She went on to explain that she did not wear makeup or have her hair styled and said of the experience, “It was a really nice feeling to go in there and show the way I look without fixing it.”
Later, after the release of the video, she Tweeted her gratitude for those who bravely participated, saying, “Special thanks to all my fans, family and friends for being natural and beautiful in my Try lyric video!!! : )”
It is a powerful message in this day and age of intense and invasive scrutiny of physical appearance of celebrities and non-celebrities alike.
