David Letterman Announces Retirement (Video)

David Letterman has announced his retirement from ‘The Late Show’ on CBS. During the taping of the show he made the announcement that he will be leaving in 2015.

It came without advanced warning or fanfare. The longtime late-night host and comedian 66-year-old David Letterman simply unveiled his plans to retire from the program of which he has been host since 1993. After his monologue, he took a seat at his desk to share his news with the studio audience at the famed Ed Sullivan Theater and the world at large.

He began noting he had spoken with the head of CBS, Leslie Moonves. He said, “And I phoned him just before the program, and I said ‘Leslie, it’s been great, you’ve been great, and the network has been great, but I’m retiring,’”

He was lavish with his thanks and praise for CBS and his colleagues. As he summed up, he said, “I just want to reiterate my thanks for the support from the network, all of the people who have worked here, all of the people in the theater, all the people on the staff, everybody at home, thank you very much.”

As can be expected, he was not one to hold back from humor on the occasion. And so it was that he quipped of his show’s longtime band leader, Paul Shaffer, “What this means now, is that Paul and I can be married.”

He went on to add: “We don’t have the timetable for this precisely down – I think it will be at least a year or so, but sometime in the not too distant future, 2015 for the love of God, in fact, Paul and I will be wrapping things up.”

Now with his looming departure, the speculation game as to who will take over that hallowed time slot on late-night television. As NBC has had its share of late night television wars, all has been stable and quiet at CBS. David Letterman famously left NBC for CBS after a little over a decade as host of’ Late Night’ at the network.

And now as he retired from late night television, the speculation game goes on until there is a definite answer. But in the meantime you can see David Letterman’s full announcement in the video below!
