Shailene Woodley on ‘Divergent,’ ‘Twilight Saga,’ Jennifer Lawrence, Relationships in ‘Teen Vogue’ Interview

Divergent’ star Shailene Woodley speaks her mind on ‘The Twilight Saga,’ advice she got from Jennifer Lawrence, relationships and more in a cover story interview for ‘Teen Vogue.

Shailene Woodley is the big star in Hollywood in ‘Divergent’ — which is predicted to equal if not eclipse ‘The Hunger Games’ to which it is frequently compared. Directed by Neil Burger, it is based on the bestselling young adult novel of the same title by Veronica Roth. Like ‘The Hunger Games,’ a trilogy of novels as well as movies are in the works.

The 22-year-old actress has already shown she is not afraid to speak up and share her opinion, no matter whose eyebrows it may raise. While the cover photo and the inside photos in ‘Teen Vogue’ are quite lovely, and the interview is quite lovely, we already know what some of the takeaways will be.

And starting from the top, her thoughts on ‘The Twilight Saga’ franchise. Even as she risks stepping on the toes of untold millions of fans, she says of it, “Twilight, I’m sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship. She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she’s going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve.”

She makes a strong point and, too, she speaks from the vantage point of one who portrays a strong female protagonist — indeed a literal warrior — not a girlfriend or would-be girlfriend. She is the teenager, Tris Prior, who does not fit into any of the dystopian society’s strictly defined personality types and thus, is ‘divergent,’ a threat.

As she signed on for this career-making role, she turned to none other than ‘The Hunger Games’ star and fellow warrior protagonist: “I asked Jennifer Lawrence, ‘Are you happy with your choice to take on The Hunger Games?’ And she said she wouldn’t change it for the world. She told me, ‘There are some things—don’t make a sex tape, don’t do drugs, don’t do things in public—that you wouldn’t want other people judging you for. But this is the best decision you’ll ever make.”

Clearly the decision to take on this role was long-considered and well-thought out. Woodley reveals that after her success in George Clooney’s critically acclaimed movie, “The Descendants” that she was encouraged to “ride the wave.” She said, “And I was like, ‘You ride the wave and it eventually crashes on the shore. That doesn’t work out! I’m going to just sit here and paddleboard.’” She went on to add, “I didn’t do a movie for two years because I didn’t read anything that was inspiring to me.”

She shared a few tidbits about relationships as well, saying, “I haven’t had time to think about a relationship! I literally have not had a boyfriend in almost five years. I’ve never even hooked up with anybody I’ve worked on a movie with.” Asked about what happened after a movie had wrapped, she told the interviewer, with a laugh, “Well, that might have happened on something….”

And yes, that will be part of the onslaught of public attention and scrutiny. Who is Shailene Woodley dating? Who is her boyfriend? Or for that matter, her girlfriend! Yes, there will be much speculation as she enters the limelight full force and transitions from a serious actress of promise to full-fledged Hollywood A-list and the fan frenzy and celebrity hoopla.
