Robin Thicke and Paula Patton have announced that they have split after almost nine years of marriage. The ‘Blurred Lines’ R&B music superstar and the actress were a longtime couple since their teenage years.
The couple released a statement exclusively to People Magazine: “We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time.”
Robin Thicke, 36, and Paula Patton, 38 got married in 2005, and have a young son together, Julian Fuego who was born in April 2010 and who recently had a cameo appearance in Thicke’s music video for ‘Give It 2 U.’
Over the years, both have spoken passionately about their longtime relationship which began when they were in their mid-teens and met at a teen club in Los Angeles. They had frequently walked the red carpet together, most recently at the 56th Grammys; the picture above is from the Clive Davis pre-Grammy Gala.
But as Robin Thicke ruled the charts around the world for weeks on end with his smash hit ‘Blurred Lines’ — with collaborators Pharrell Williams and T.I. — he drew his share of controversy over the explicitness and nudity of the video for the hit song. For a time, he defended the song in interviews, and also said that it was his wife, Paula Patton who had encouraged him to release the explicit version of the video. For her part, Paula Patton spoke in interviews about the sex scenes she did with her co-star Denzel Washington, in the movie ’2 Guns.’
So it’s just all in a day’s work, if you are in the entertainment world, or so it seemed. The couple’s longevity and obvious passion for each other was refreshing.
They were not plagued with tabloid drama until recent months, coinciding with Robin Thicke’s performance with Miley Cyrus at the MTV VMAs which saw her twerking (as he, in later interviews called himself the “twerkee”), suddenly in one incident after another — starting with that fateful MTV VMAs night — as Robin Thicke was photographed on more than one occasion flirting with and/or grabbing intimate body parts of other women. His behavior did not evade the watchfulness of sites such as TMZ and RadarOnline.
So rumors were proliferating and cheating allegations were on the rise. Yet, through it all, the couple was often in public, and often affectionate on the red carpet and they seemed to ride out the rumors and the cheating allegations. Until now. Thus far, a statement has been released. There is no word, as of yet, of a divorce.
