Kate Winslet opened up about why she named her baby Bear Blaze and also talked about what she was doing during the L.A. earthquake. The Oscar-winning actress had quite a bit to share and it was quite a lively chat on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show!’
The 38-year-old was on the daytime talk show to promote the much anticipated ‘Divergent’ which sees her among the costars in a villainous role. But Kate Winslet had plenty of news of her own, some of it due to the timing of the interview as one of the first appearances she has made on television since giving birth. Thus she is making the obligatory debut of her post-baby body (picture above).
And it’s not just that she recently had a child, the first with her third husband, Ned Rocknroll in 2012. And while some may have still thought her husband had an unusual surname, that was nothing compared to the name of their child: Bear Blaze. By now we are accustomed to unusual names of celebrity children — or children in our everyday lives for that matter. We may wonder what’s the story behind the name and hope that our curiosity will be satisfied. Kate Winslet did just that.
She dutifully explained each name. Of “Bear” she said, “A friend of mine when I was younger was nicknamed Bear, and I just had always really loved it. And he was very much a bear. He was everyone’s shoulder to cry on, he was a big bear hug, he was a great figure in my life, and I just had always remembered him, and so that’s where it came from.”
She went on to explain, “And then Bear’s second name is Blaze because my husband and I met in a house fire basically.”
It does explain it, as the couple did famously meet at Ned Rocknroll’s uncle’s house, his uncle being Richard Branson, and the fire was the one that made international news, as the estate on a private island in the British Virgin Islands went up in flames and thankfully all who were in the house survived.
And, as she reminded us, Bear Blaze’s surname is Winslet, and Ellen DeGeneres did ask why it wasn’t Rocknroll, after his father. To which Kate Winslet said, “Why do you think, Ellen?”
But the ‘Divergent’ star was not finished with her amazing stories to share. A day prior to the broadcast of the interview, also coincidentally St. Patrick’s Day, she had just been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and while that was an honor, and Ellen DeGeneres pointed out that her star was close in location to her own. They got on to the subject of the 4.7 earthquake which shook Los Angeles that same day.
Kate Winslet explained she spent the earthquake pumping breast milk for her baby. She said, “I’m here for 48 hours I couldn’t bring him. It’s too far. It’s a 12-hour plane ride. And so I’m pumping, staring at my beautiful picture of my beautiful baby boy and my husband is on the other line and the room starts to shake. So, I said I’ve got to go. I got to call you back. Hung up, ran into the door frame with my friend who was with me and she’s like it’s an earthquake.” She went on say, “I just carried on pumping through the whole entire thing,” adding, ““You know us girls, we just do it, don’t we? When you do it, you just do it.”
