ANAHEIM, Calif.—Paul Fletcher, publisher and editor-in-chief of Virginia Lawyers Weekly, has been elected national Secretary-Treasurer of the Society of Professional Journalists.
SPJ, founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, is the largest and most broad-based journalism group in the country, with members from the print, broadcast and online communities. The society has more than 7,500 members in professional and student chapters across the nation.
Elections were held during the weekend of the Excellence in Journalism conference, a joint effort of SPJ, the Radio Television Digital News Association and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. Results of the nationwide electronic balloting were announced Aug.26. David Cuillier, a journalism professor at the University of Arizona, is the new president; Dana Neuts, a free-lance journalist from Kent, Wash., was voted president-elect.
Fletcher is the immediate past president of the Virginia Pro chapter of SPJ, which was named Outstanding Small Chapter of the Year for 2012-13. SPJVA also was honored with awards for its First Amendment work and for campus relations.
