Eydie Gormé , Emmy- and Grammy-winning singer, died this weekend in Las Vegas at the age of 84.
She has been a pop music staple since the 1950s, performing with husband Steve Lawrence in Las Vegas, the Catskills, and on The Ed Sullivan Show, as well as solo, releasing the hit Blame It On the Bossa Nova in 1963.
Eydie was born Edith Gormezano in The Bronx to a Sicilian father and Turkish mother. She worked as a translator with the United Nations after high school, and then joined Tex Beneke's Big Band’s tour for a year.
She met Steve when the two were regulars on Steve Allen’s The Tonight Show. They married in 1957. The couple has two sons, one of whom died unexpectedly in the 1980s of an undiagnosed heart condition at 23.
Says Steve of his wife:
"Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing.... While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time."
Eydie retired from the stage in 2009, but maintained her role in the Steve and Edie duo as the blogger for their website.
We LOVE that Eydie remained so active with her fans all these years, and her 55-year marriage to Steve is proof that show business can’t break true love, no matter what.
Our thoughts are with you, Steve. We wish your family the best at this difficult time.
