Shailene Woodley spoke on a range of topics including ‘Divergent’ which sees her in the starring role, as well as her reasons for turning down the role of Anastasia Steele in ‘Fifty Shades of Gray,’ in a new interview. The rising star had much to say!
The 22-year-old actress is all but guaranteed to become a huge star and to take her place on the Hollywood A list, much in the same way as other actresses in such franchises based on young adult novels, notably Kristen Stewart of ‘The Twilight Saga’ and, an even more close comparison, Jennifer Lawrence of ‘The Hunger Games’ trilogy.
The parallels are striking as both novels are set in a near-future dystopia and find their protagonists at odds with a society that has little regard for them. ‘Divergent’ the movie is based on the Veronica Roth novel of the same title set in a Chicago we would not want to live in. It’s expected to be but the first in a series of movies which see Shaliene Woodley portraying teenager Tris Prior who does not fit into any of her society’s rigidly defined personality types. Hence she is “divergent” which in this world not an ideal.
Speaking with The Daily Beast, Woodley spoke about her character and why she was so drawn to the movie, saying, “There’s so much opportunity for conversation since the movie is so metaphorical to today’s society. One of the most beautiful quotes in the book is when Tris says, “Back in the day, my mom had a choice between eating naturally-irrigated food and genetically-engineered foods. Now, there is no choice. That’s all we have.”
She went on to add, “There’s the issue of a tyrant taking over and genocide—someone going in, choosing a particular class of people, and murdering them by brainwashing other people. And there’s the issue of spying on other people and this whole drone situation going on now.”
Asked how she felt about how the expected fame will impact her life and diminish her privacy, she said, “The thing with privacy is I’m just going to make sure that whatever I hold sacred stays sacred. What I hold dear to my heart is nobody’s business in the same way whatever you hold dear to your heart is nobody’s business, unless you’re willing to share that.”
She shared a surprising tidbit that has drawn headlines, “As far as the hacking stuff goes, I don’t really have to worry about that. I’m not a big technology person. I don’t even have a smartphone. I don’t even have a cellphone! And if I were to have one, it would be a flip-phone.”
Yes, hard to imagine not having a smartphone or a cell phone!
Continuing on this subject of sudden fame, she was asked about a letter she sent Jennifer Lawrence asking for some words of advice. Woodley said, “She was like, “Small things will change, but if you stay who you are, nothing will change. The big picture won’t change. It’s only going to make your life greater and you’ll be so grateful for it. Don’t be stupid, don’t make a sex tape, don’t do drugs, don’t go to Whole Foods the day the movie opens, and you’ll be fine!” I thought, “I’m gonna love this chick when I meet her.”
And, surprisingly, perhaps she turned down chance to audition for the plumb role of Anastasia Grey in the screen adaptation of EL James’ ‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ which has just wrapped filming with Dakota Johnson in that role opposite Jamie Dormer’s Christian Grey.
She said of it, “I didn’t want to audition for it. It’s because I had already done Divergent and I knew there was no way I wanted to do multiple franchises at the same time, because that’s crazy, so I didn’t see the point in it.”
Shailene Woodley speaks at length on ‘Divergent’ and the character she portrays and how her costar Theo James was cast and much more. It’s a long but quite absorbing read, and gives us some insight into this emerging Hollywood star.
