An update to “Minnesota Legal Ethics,” a guide written by William Wernz, is available at http://minnesotalawyering.com/updates/. This month is the always tricky topic of firing a client, which is covered by Rule 1.16 of the Minnesota Rules of Professional Conduct. There is a comprehensive discussion of handling client papers and property and Opinion 13, which Wernz says should be repealed since the Minnesota Supreme Court has “emasculated” it. If you’ve got a problem client on your hands, and who doesn’t, you may wish to read Wernz.
