Too Late

The question I'm asked more than any other is whether having a robust social media presence a lawyer can find wealth and prestige on the internet. As even casual readers know, my answer is invariably "no."  But since that blabbermouth, Jason Wilson, has spilled the beans, you might as well know the truth. You're just too late:

This is not a joke. Lawyers, you MUST be on Vine now. If you aren’t producing 6 second looping videos about your practice, associates and their hipster attire, speaking engagements, ghost-written blog and marketing content, or the office cat, then you may already be too late. Wait any longer, and you’ll be behind the most innovative thinkers in the legal space, those who are making quirky videos to bolster their Twitter and Facebook feeds, MAKING THEMSELVES RELEVANT in today’s distraction economy. 1 If you aren’t doing this, the Millennials—your future associates—will think Luddites. And that’s just your potential workforce. Think about all the business you are missing out on, right now. After all, 95% of all lawyers use social media, and 50% of them get substantial business from it. These firms and lawyers are the future. Don’t be a five percenter.

This was posted two days ago, February 1, 2013. All the early adopters now own the place, and the millions of clients that go with it. That's all they needed, a two day head start. Done.  If it wasn't already too late, it's too late now.

And you're still trying to find a marketeer to do your search engine optimization. You fool. Why not buy a Nehru jacket, while your at it, since it will do you just about as much good.  After all, Vine's six second loop of video meshes perfectly with the attention span of cutting edge social media gurus, and if they adore it, then it's the obvious means of gaining fabulous success online.

Silly?  Ridiculous? Worthless?  Well, sure. But that's social media, cutting edge without substance.  The important point is to be ahead of every curve there is so you aren't left behind. Nobody wants to be left behind, right?

At LegalTech New York, the story making the rounds of marketeers is that 95% of all lawyers use social media, and 50% get business from it. It was repeated over and over, though no one seems capable of recalling who came up with these percentages or what they're based on. A few people questioned the numbers, because they don't comport with anyone's real life experience. In fact, those few people who challenged the stats suggested that they were wildly baseless. No one there cared. These were the numbers they loved, and so they were repeated over and over with ever-increasing glee.

So don't be one of the 5% who will shrivel and die without Vine.  But if you're crying now for having missed the window of opportunity, wipe away those tears.  There will be some new best thing ever tomorrow, and if you hop aboard, you too can be one of those lawyers who makes a killing for the day or two before the next big thing comes along.

Trust Jason. He knows this stuff.*

* The fact that I feel compelled to include this caveat pains me, but I know that someone out there will not realize that Jason's post is total satire. Vine is worthless. The numbers are phony and baseless. This is the lie that separates fools from their money.  Got it?
