“Blazing Saddles” Star Alex Karras Dead At 77
Alex Karras, the football player who became an actor, has died at the age of 77 of kidney failure.
Karras passed away on Wednesday, days after being discharged from Santa Monica hospital to have hospice care at his home.
A statement from Karras’ family spokesperson confirmed his death and revealed the star passed away after “a heroic fight with kidney disease, heart disease, dementia and for the last two years, stomach cancer”.
Alex Karras began his career as a professional wrestler before playing football for the Detroit Lions when he was drafted to the team in 1958.
He began acting in the 1960s and landed the role as Mongo in the 1972 Mel Brooks comedy “Blazing Saddles”.
Alex starred in the 1980s sitcom “Webster”, where he appeared alongside his real-life wife, Susan Clark.
Karras was also part of the Howard Cosell-era Monday Night Football broadcast team for three seasons, from 1974-1976.
His other movie credits include the comedy “Porky’s”, the Julie Andrews musical “Victor Victoria”, and the film “Against All Odds”.
On Monday, Karras was reported to be near death after suffering kidney failure.
Karras is survived by his wife Susan Clark, who he met when they starred together in the movie about golfer Babe Didrikson. The couple married in 1980, and had one daughter together.
Karras also has five children from a previous marriage.
